Dr. Howard Hu
Dr. Hu has led international teams investigating the environmental, nutritional, social, and epi/genetic determinants of chronic disease and impaired child development in population-based studies based in the US, Mexico, India (where he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar, 2000-2001), China, and elsewhere around the world. His team’s work has been continuously funded by the US National Institutes of Health, generated over 300 publications, and won many awards, such as the 1999 Progress and Achievement Award from the US NIH/NIEHS, the 2011 Award of Excellence in Research from the American Public Health Association, and the 2015 John Goldsmith Award for Outstanding Contributions from the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology. Dr. Hu has also served on the Board of Population and Public Health Practice of the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences; the Board of Environmental Studies and Toxicology of the National Research Council; the External Advisory Council of the US National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences; and the Research Committee of the Health Effects Institute. In 2017, he was elected to fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
In terms of clinical medicine, Dr. Hu is board-certified in internal medicine and preventive (occupational) medicine. He has conducted clinical research in multiple chemical sensitivities, following over 300 patients with the disorder at academic occupational/environmental medicine clinics at each of the universities where he’s served.
